The
Farm-to-School
initiative began in the fall of 2008 by introducing
locally-grown food choices to the Little Falls School
district lunch menu. The HCC partnered with the Farm
–to-School committee to promote the event and
mobilize the volunteers to assist with sampling and
educating during the monthly “Tasty Day”
events. HCC brought along the mascot “Farmer
Jane” to assist with building excitement and
awareness of healthy food items such as: tomatoes,
corn, squash, carrots, potatoes, wild rice, honey,
maple syrup and asparagus.
The HCC is one of many partners involved
with the Farm-to-School program which hopes to expand
to other school districts in Morrison County. Community
partners include: Little Falls School District, Whole
Farm Coop, Morrison County Public Health, U of M Extension
office/Nutrition Education, Grace of God Mission and
Morrison County Farmers Union. |
